Hiking in South Africa
South Africa has day hikes within an hour of most cities — city reserves, national parks on the urban edge, wine-valley mountains and coastal forests. Hikeza lists trails we have verified route by route. This page explains what the site covers today and what we have not built yet.

Cape Town and the peninsula
The deepest coverage on the site. Table Mountain National Park runs from Lion's Head and Platteklip Gorge through Newlands Forest, Constantia Nek, Silvermine Nature Reserve and the southern peninsula. Tygerberg is the City reserve in Welgemoed, not a SANParks gate. Helderberg Nature Reserve is the City gate above Somerset West. Gordon's Bay adds Crystal Pools in season. Start with the Cape Town walking trails guide or the Table Mountain trails guide if the mountain itself is your main goal. Dedicated pages cover the named Table Mountain routes: Table Mountain hike, Lion's Head hike, Platteklip Gorge and India Venster.
Browse all Cape Town listings — suburbs from City Bowl parks to Kalk Bay climbs.
West Coast National Park
North of Cape Town, SANParks' Langebaan park has short Geelbek and Bakoor day walks, and booked August–September Postberg flower hikes. Start with the West Coast National Park hiking guide.
Winelands
Stellenbosch's Jonkershoek hiking trails, Franschhoek's Mont Rochelle and Paarl Mountain make up most listings here. Expect CapeNature or municipal fees and booked permits rather than free gate access. Wine-estate picnics on the site are pre-booked baskets, not bring-your-own trailheads. Picnic searches for Stellenbosch are covered on the picnic spots in Stellenbosch guide.
Overberg and Hermanus
Hermanus has two verified listings: the free Cliff Path along Walker Bay and Fernkloof Nature Reserve above town. Further east, De Hoop Nature Reserve holds the booked Whale Trail and two Potberg day walks. Start with the Hermanus Cliff Path guide, the Whale Trail guide, or Kogelberg hiking trails.
Johannesburg and Pretoria
Gauteng hiking is mostly municipal reserves and private operators — Klipriviersberg, Melville Koppies, Suikerbosrand, Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve, Rietvlei, Groenkloof, Faerie Glen, Moreleta Kloof and Magaliesberg day trails. Many are free or low-cost compared to Western Cape national parks. Dog policy varies sharply by reserve.

Durban metro
Krantzkloof, Giba Gorge, Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park and Kenneth Stainbank are the current Durban listings — gorge forest, a free environmental precinct, a paid Pinetown park and a coastal forest reserve managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. Oribi Gorge and Lake Eland sit on the site as a longer day trip south of the city, not a quick after-work hike. Start with the hiking trails in Durban guide.
Garden Route and Tsitsikamma
Storms River Mouth holds the short Mouth Trail to the suspension bridges, the Waterfall Trail, and the booked Otter Trail. Between Knysna and Plett, Garden of Eden is the 800m SANParks boardwalk. West at Plettenberg Bay, Robberg Nature Reserve is CapeNature's three-loop peninsula. Start with the Knysna hiking guide, the Featherbed Nature Reserve private cruise-and-walk, the Tsitsikamma hiking trails guide or the Robberg guide.
Cederberg
CapeNature wilderness day hikes to the Wolfberg Arch via the Cracks and the Maltese Cross, both with Sanddrif permits and a three-adult minimum. Read the Cederberg hiking guide before you drive the N7.
Drakensberg (easy day walks hub)
The Drakensberg hub lists shorter, operator-run walks at Royal Natal, Cathedral Peak Hotel and Kamberg — not the full wilderness overnight network. These are 2.5–4 hours from Durban and aimed at visitors who want a gentler mountain day without committing to a multi-day hike.
Honest gaps — what we do not cover yet
Searching "hiking South Africa" will also pull up places we have not listed to our verification standard:
- Harkerville and the Elephant Trail — Garden of Eden and the 9km Kranshoek Trail are listed. SANParks still lists Harkerville at 26km, but the July 2026 Knysna-section open list named Perdekop, Kranshoek, Flora and Garden of Eden and omitted it. We have not published a listing.
- Cederberg overnight and rock-art sites — wilderness blocks, Stadsaal Cave, Truitjieskraal and Rocklands need their own CapeNature desks. Only the Sanddrif day hikes are listed today.
- Serious Drakensberg overnight hiking — the hub here covers easy walks from hotels and park gates, not the escarpment chain routes, pass hikes or multi-day backpacks that need Ezemvelo wilderness bookings.
- Other Hout Bay and harbour walks — Chapman's Peak hike is listed. Harbour paths are not.
We would rather leave a gap than paste in distances, fees or phone numbers we cannot tie to an official park or municipality page.
