Kogelberg hiking trails: Palmiet, Oudebosch and the 24km circuit

CapeNature’s published day walks — and the one Kleinmond route that needs no permit.

Searches for Kogelberg usually mean CapeNature’s reserve on the R44 before Kleinmond, not a single blended “the hike”. Hikeza lists the day walks the official page gives distances for. Hermanus and the Whale Trail are a different Overberg day — see Hermanus Cliff Path and Whale Trail.

Day walks we list

On the official page, not listed as walk-up days

Perdeberg is 22km (seven to eight hours) from Iona Wine Estate. Houwhoek is 8km from Houwhoek Inn and needs a permit in advance. The Highlands Trail is a booked two-day route (16km then 21km), maximum 12 people, overnight in Kleinmond at your own cost — not a reserve cabin. Rooisand boardwalk and Rooisand Ramble are closed until further notice.

Questions

Do you need a permit to hike in Kogelberg?
Yes for the reserve-office day walks (Palmiet, Oudebosch–Harold Porter, Kogelberg Trail, Perdeberg, Houwhoek). Buy at the office or on 087 087 8250. The Three Sisters Trail from Kleinmond Golf Course needs no permit — it starts and ends on municipal land. Rooisand Ramble is closed until further notice.
What does day access cost at Kogelberg?
CapeNature’s reserve page has shown more than one figure: R60/R30 in the day-hike copy and R65/R45 under conservation fees. Confirm the current tariff at the office or on the official page before you drive.
Is there cellphone reception in Kogelberg?
No, after you leave the tar. CapeNature says the last reception is at the turn from the R44 onto the gravel road.
