Search results mix De Hoop Nature Reserve, a couple of short Potberg day walks, and the Whale Trail itself. Only the last one is CapeNature's reserved 55km, five-day route from Potberg to Koppie Alleen.
What CapeNature actually lists
On the official Whale Trail page, the route runs 55km through De Hoop Nature Reserve, with five overnight stops. You sleep the first night at Potberg, then walk. Day one is the hardest: 15.5km and about eight hours over Potberg (611m), with a chance of seeing the Cape vulture colony. Later days drop to the coast beside one of Africa's larger marine protected areas. Southern right whales are typically in these waters from June to November.
See the Whale Trail listing for the facts we have checked against that page: start and end, group size, shuttle, and the reminder that we do not invent the package price.
How to book
Book through CapeNature — not through Hikeza, and not at the gate on the day. Groups are six or twelve people only. Children under eight are not allowed. CapeNature's published tariff includes the shuttle from Koppie Alleen back to the Potberg office; portage of luggage boxes is extra.

We do not copy a rand figure for the trail package. CapeNature's own pages have shown different starting tariffs. Ask them for the current rate when you book. Day access at De Hoop is a separate product from the Whale Trail booking.
If you cannot get a permit — the day walks at Potberg
Most people who drive into De Hoop are not on the Whale Trail. CapeNature lists two day walks at Potberg:
- Klipspringer Trail — 6km circular, about two hours, from Potberg Eco Venue.
- Potberg Trail — 10km, about three hours.
Day-hike permits are sold at the reserve office or through CapeNature Central Reservations. The official De Hoop page has published R50 per adult and R30 per child — confirm before you go. There is also a linear Coastal Trail from Koppie Alleen along the beach or rocky shore; CapeNature does not publish a distance for that walk, so we have not listed it as a trail.
Tourism cottages and camping at De Hoop (everything except the Whale Trail) are run by De Hoop Collection, not by CapeNature's trail desk. Do not mix those booking lines.
Practical notes we will not invent
- Exact cottage layout, menu rules and current package prices belong on CapeNature's booking papers.
- The Denel Overberg Testing Range can force a short-notice evacuation on the eastern sector.
- Tide alternatives on the last day to Koppie Alleen are briefed on arrival — not guessed from a blog.
- Kogelberg, further west in the Overberg, is still a gap on this site.
Browse De Hoop listings or the Overberg hub. Hermanus is a different coast: the Hermanus Cliff Path is a free day walk, not a booked hike.
- How long is the Whale Trail?
- CapeNature lists the Whale Trail as 55km over five days, from Potberg to Koppie Alleen in De Hoop Nature Reserve, with five overnight stops. Hikers spend the first night at Potberg before walking.
- Can you walk the Whale Trail without a booking?
- No. Reservations are limited to groups of six or twelve. Book through CapeNature (087 087 8250 or the official online Whale Trail booking page). There is no walk-up start.
- Is the Klipspringer Trail the Whale Trail?
- No. The Klipspringer Trail is a 6km, two-hour circular day walk from Potberg Eco Venue. The Potberg Trail is a separate 10km day walk. Neither needs a Whale Trail permit.
