People searching “Table Mountain Nature Reserve” mean Table Mountain National Park — SANParks, not a separate municipal reserve. "Table Mountain hike" covers routes with almost nothing in common besides the mountain. Some are flat contour paths with no summit climb; others involve chains, ladders and real exposure. This guide compares the four Tafelberg Road / Kloof Nek standards. The forested eastern climb from Kirstenbosch is Skeleton Gorge, not one of these four.
| Route | Distance | Grade | Time | Reaches | Dogs | Parking |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|

| Lion's Head | 5.5 km | moderate | 2.5 h | Lion's Head peak, not the plateau | My Activity | Street parking on Signal Hill Road, very limited at sunset. |
| Platteklip Gorge | 3 km | hard | 3 h | Table Mountain plateau | No | Paid parking at Tafelberg Road, fills early on weekends. |
| India Venster | 3.7 km | hard | 3.5 h | Table Mountain plateau | No | Paid parking at the Lower Cable Station, Tafelberg Road. |
Pipe Track — the easy option
Pipe Track follows an old water-pipe route along the mountain's western face from Kloof Nek toward Camps Bay and the Twelve Apostles. Unlike the other three, it stays roughly level rather than climbing to the summit — 12km, rated easy, with steady views over Lion's Head, Camps Bay and Bakoven. There's little shade for most of it, so carry water and sun protection even though the grading is gentle.
Lion's Head — the popular sunrise-and-sunset hike
Lion's Head hike (listing) is Cape Town's most-hiked route: a 5.5km spiral path around the peak with 360° views over the city, Camps Bay and Table Mountain proper. There's a short chain-and-ladder scramble near the summit, but a bypass path lets you skip it if you'd rather not. It's extremely busy on full moon nights and at sunset generally — street parking on Signal Hill Road is very limited, so get there early.
Platteklip Gorge — the original, most direct route
Platteklip Gorge (listing) is the most direct way to the summit: a steep, 3km climb almost straight up the mountain's face in a series of stone steps. SANParks rates it at 1 hour for a very fit hiker up to 3 hours for a less fit one. There's no shade and no water along the way, so start early and carry more than you think you'll need.
India Venster — the hardest standard route
India Venster (listing) climbs almost directly beneath the cableway, threading through a rock "window" via bouldering and scrambling sections aided by chains and metal staples. Multiple independent hiking guides rate it as the most physically and technically demanding of the mountain's standard routes, with real exposure on narrow ledges. It is not a route for anyone afraid of heights or hiking with young children.

Table Mountain hiking routes in Cape Town
Four Tafelberg Road / Kloof Nek standards, plus the Kirstenbosch ravine: Pipe Track, Lion's Head, Platteklip Gorge, India Venster and Skeleton Gorge. They share a mountain, not a grade. Pick from the notes below rather than treating “Table Mountain hike” as one walk.
Which route to pick
First time up the mountain and reasonably fit: Platteklip Gorge is the classic choice. Want the view without the summit commitment: Lion's Head, ideally at sunrise before the crowds. After a long, level walk rather than a climb: Pipe Track. Experienced, comfortable with exposure, and want the most technical route Table Mountain has to offer as a standard hike: India Venster. Starting from Kirstenbosch for a long, wet, laddered ravine: Skeleton Gorge (about 5.5 hours according to SANBI). Whichever you pick, none of them have water on route — carry your own, and check the what to pack guide before you go.
Before you go
The cableway and the mountain's upper reaches close in strong south-easter winds regardless of which route you're on foot, so a clear forecast matters more than the difficulty rating for all four of these. Distance, difficulty and safety details above come from each trail's individual listing, sourced from SANParks and independent hiking guides rather than a single write-up applied to all four; see our listing disclaimer for how we source and flag anything that changes.
Parking and where each route starts
Pipe Track starts from Kloof Nek — grass-verge parking at the neck, not a formal pay carpark. Lion's Head uses very limited street parking on Signal Hill Road off Kloof Nek; many hikers walk up from the neck or take a taxi when the lot is full at sunset. Platteklip Gorge and India Venster both start near the Lower Cable Station on Tafelberg Road, with paid parking that fills early on weekends. None of these four charge a SANParks gate fee at the trailhead, but parking costs and time limits still apply.
Coming down by cable car
Platteklip Gorge and India Venster both reach the Table Mountain plateau. You can walk down the same route, or buy a one-way ticket on the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway from the upper station if your legs are done and the cableway is open. The cableway closes in strong wind — it is not a guaranteed exit. Check operating status on the day; hiking up and assuming you can ride down is a common mistake.
Groups of four
SANParks recommends walking, running and cycling in Table Mountain National Park in groups of four or more. That applies to these routes too, especially quieter sections of Pipe Track and the upper parts of Platteklip and India Venster. Lion's Head at full moon feels busy; an empty contour path does not. See our Table Mountain hiking safety guide for weather, what to tell someone at home, and emergency numbers from SANParks and WSAR.
Permits and fees
Dog walking on permitted routes needs a SANParks My Activity permit. Pay-gate sections of the park are a separate question from these four trailheads. Full detail sits in our hiking permits in South Africa guide.
