Newlands Forest, Table Mountain

Eastern-slope forest in Table Mountain National Park — picnic pay point, dog walks and a hard ravine, not one blended hike.

Newlands Forest sits on Table Mountain’s eastern flank above the southern suburbs. People search it as one place. On the ground it is a SANParks picnic and braai site plus a set of forest walks that share the Union Avenue / M3 side of the mountain. Listings: Newlands Forest picnic and braai, Contour Path, Woodcutters Trail and Newlands Ravine.

Picnic and braai — the official pay point

SANParks names Newlands as one of Table Mountain National Park’s picnic and braai areas, alongside Tokai, Silvermine, Oudekraal and others. The official picnic-sites page says alcohol, dogs and music are prohibited in those picnic braai areas, and that braaing is often banned in high wind. We do not copy a rand figure — SANParks publishes the current Newlands conservation fee on the TMNP rates page and sells day tickets online.

The TMNP My Green Card (Cape Town residents) includes Tokai and Newlands braai and picnic areas among its twelve free pay-point entries. A Wild Card also covers daily conservation fees at those gates. Neither card replaces a My Activity permit if you are walking a dog on allowed trails.

Official picnic list: Picnic sites — Table Mountain National Park (SANParks).

Forest walks versus the ravine

SANParks does not publish kilometre figures for the everyday Newlands forest walks on that picnic page. We therefore do not invent distances. What we do list:

Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine start inside Kirstenbosch, not from the Newlands picnic lawns. They are the neighbouring eastern-slope climbs, not Newlands Forest itself. Rhodes Memorial is the free lawn picnic on Devil’s Peak, a different facility from the SANParks Newlands braai site.

Dogs, parking, permits

Dog walking on permitted Table Mountain routes needs a My Activity permit (Level 1). Buy it on SANParks, not at a Union Avenue booth. Details and official links sit on the hiking permits guide. Do not take a dog into the picnic and braai area — SANParks bans dogs there.

Parking for the forest side is off Union Avenue (M3, Newlands). We do not publish a parking rand figure. Confirm charges on site and current gate hours on SANParks before you go.

Do you pay to walk in Newlands Forest?
SANParks lists Newlands Forest Picnic Site as a Table Mountain National Park pay point. Confirm the current Newlands conservation fee on the official TMNP rates page. A Wild Card or TMNP My Green Card covers the picnic and braai pay points. Forest walks that start outside that picnic gate are a separate access question — check the live SANParks page for the entrance you will use.
Are dogs allowed in Newlands Forest?
On permitted Table Mountain walking routes, dog walking needs a SANParks My Activity permit (Level 1). SANParks prohibits dogs, alcohol and music in picnic and braai areas, including Newlands.
Is Newlands Forest a good picnic or a good hike?
Both, but they are not the same visit. The picnic and braai site is a fenced SANParks facility. The Contour Path and Woodcutters Trail are the gentler forest walks from the same Union Avenue side. Newlands Ravine is a steep gorge climb, not a picnic stroll. Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine start from Kirstenbosch, not from the Newlands picnic lawns.
