Hiking trails in Cape Town beyond Table Mountain

Beyond the mountain itself — where else to walk in Cape Town.

Most "hiking places in Cape Town" searches land on Table Mountain — it's covered in full in our dedicated Table Mountain guide, plus the Lion's Head hike and Platteklip Gorge pages. This one covers everywhere else: the southern suburbs forests, the reserves toward False Bay, and the flat city parks that are a better fit for a walk than a hike. Filtered lists live on the hub: easy hiking trails in Cape Town and free hiking trails in Cape Town. Trails near your current location are on hiking spots near me, not this page.

Hiking places in Cape Town

Hiking places in Cape Town here are those same southern-suburbs forests, False Bay reserves and city parks. The Cape Town hub table is the comparison, not a best-of ranking.

Silvermine and the southern peninsula

Inside the Silvermine section of Table Mountain National Park (Silvermine Nature Reserve guide), the Waterfall Trail is a mostly flat, easy 4.5km path to a seasonal waterfall — best after winter rain, since it can run dry in summer. Elephant's Eye climbs to a cave with wide views over Tokai and Muizenberg — see the Elephant's Eye hike guide. There's no cellphone signal in that cave section; SANParks says the Silvermine gate has no credit-card facilities. On the Atlantic side, Chapman's Peak hike starts from the Hout Bay side of the drive (Chapman's Peak guide). Further round the coast, Kalk Bay's trails climb off Boyes Drive — a scenic area with a documented history of hiker safety incidents; go in a group.

Constantia and Newlands: the forested eastern slopes

Constantia has the widest range of any single area: Kirstenbosch's picnic lawns sit at the foot of Nursery Ravine and Skeleton Gorge (Skeleton Gorge hike guide), two hard climbs up the mountain's forested eastern face that SANBI treats as the safe pair behind the garden. Newlands Forest (Newlands Forest guide), on the Contour Path's route toward Kirstenbosch, has the gentler Contour Path and Woodcutters Trail alongside the technical Newlands Ravine — read the difficulty rating carefully before picking between them. SANParks does not publish kilometre figures for those forest walks. Tokai Forest, on the southern side, is covered as a picnic pay point and permit office, not as invented plantation loops. Cecilia Forest is the Constantia-side forest walk to a seasonal waterfall from Rhodes Drive — SANParks does not publish a kilometre figure. Constantia Nek is the Rhodes Drive trailhead for the De Villiers Dam circuit, not a restaurant page.

Rondevlei: False Bay wetland, not Table Mountain

Rondevlei Nature Reserve in Grassy Park is the 290-hectare City section of False Bay Nature Reserve: footpaths, bird hides and official picnic areas, 07:30–17:00, closed Christmas Day. Confirm the Nature Conservation tariff on the City page. It is not a SANParks Wild Card gate.

Blaauwberg: the northern coast, not Table Mountain

Blaauwberg Nature Reserve at Eerste Steen is a City of Cape Town gate: cashless adults R20 on the 2026/27 table, official picnic and braai, and City maps for a 1–2km walk plus a 4.4km coastal trail. It is not a SANParks Wild Card gate.

Tygerberg: northern suburbs, not Table Mountain

Tygerberg Nature Reserve in Welgemoed is a City of Cape Town reserve: cashless adults R40 on the 2026/27 table, official picnic areas, and a named City trail sheet (Golden Mole 3.6km, Ukhetshe 3.2km, a 460m wheelchair path). It is not a SANParks Wild Card gate.

Helderberg and Gordon's Bay: a different mountain range

East of the city, Helderberg and Gordon's Bay sit against the Hottentots Holland range above False Bay — a separate range from Table Mountain, with their own reserve and grading system. Helderberg Nature Reserve is a City gate: cashless adults R30 on the 2026/27 table, official picnic sites, no dogs except service dogs. Graded trails run from the easy 45-minute Sugarbird Walk to the full-day West Peak Trail, graded for experienced hikers only. Gordon's Bay's Crystal Pools (Crystal Pools guide) is seasonal — open 1 November to 30 April only, with an emailed permit required even in season.

City parks: a walk, not a hike

Not every Cape Town "walking trail" search means a mountain. Company's Garden and De Waal Park in the City Bowl, and Green Point Park near the stadium, are free, flat and dog-friendly — a lunch-break loop rather than a day out, and a better answer if you searched "walking trails" looking for exactly that.

Before you go

Cape Town's biggest variable is wind, not distance — a south-easter can shut the cableway and make an otherwise easy contour path unpleasant, so check the forecast rather than just the difficulty rating. Distance, fees and seasonal dates come from the trail listing linked in, sourced from the reserve or operator and flagged when seasonal, like Crystal Pools' permit window; see our listing disclaimer for how that sourcing works.

See every current listing, filtered by area and difficulty, on the full Cape Town hub page. Listings with published hours sit in that same table. Run a Cape Town trail desk or picnic lawn we already list? Ask about a Featured slot from R1 990 a year — first on the Cape Town hub, always labelled.
