India Venster hike: the technical Table Mountain route

Chains and a rock window under the cableway — not Platteklip, and not Lion's Head.

India Venster climbs almost directly beneath the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway. Venster is Afrikaans for window — the route threads a rock gap via bouldering and scrambling, with chains and metal staples on the crux. The listing records 3.7km, about 3.5 hours, graded hard. Dogs are not allowed.

Who it is not for

The listing is explicit: not for a fear of heights, not for young children, dangerous when wet. Solo hiking is discouraged. Start early — afternoon light and wind on the ledges are a known problem. If you want the summit without the scramble, that is the Platteklip Gorge hike.

Start and coming down

Parking is paid at the Lower Cable Station on Tafelberg Road, the same neck of road as Platteklip. India Venster reaches the plateau. You can walk down, or buy a one-way cableway ticket if the Aerial Cableway is open. It closes in strong wind. Cableway status: tablemountain.net.
