Giba Gorge Nature Reserve is the free volunteer / eThekwini walk, also called the Giba Gorge Environmental Precinct (GGEP). Listing: Giba Gorge Nature Reserve. It is not Krantzkloof and not the commercial Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park.
Official trails
From the GGEP Trails page:
- Giba_Track — St Helier Road parking to the N3 underpass, about 3km
- Ukhozi Trail — turns right off Giba_Track about 800m from parking, rejoins about 1.6km further on
- Ndabushe Trail — turns off near the Ukhozi junction about 2.5km from the start, to McIntosh Falls, just under 4km each way
Park at the St Helier Road entrance. A map sits on that page and on the signboard at the gate.
Fee, dogs, rules
Official home page: free to the public. Walking, mountain biking, bird watching. Dogs on a lead — off-lead dogs have been camera-trapped; a ban is possible. Notice-board rules: no litter, no braais, no loud music. No toilets. The committee asks for donations (Zapper at the entrance and the St Helier security hut) for alien-plant work and trail repairs. We do not put their Gmail on the listing.
Not the MTB park
The official FAQ splits GGEP (ggep.org) from the privately owned, commercially operated mountain-bike park (Giba Gorge Adventure Park, gibagorge.co.za). If you only want the free gorge walk, use the St Helier GGEP entrance — do not pay MTB rates by mistake.

- Is Giba Gorge free?
- The official GGEP site says the reserve is open to the public free of charge. Donations for alien-plant and trail work are welcome (Zapper at the entrance). The paid Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park next door is a different, commercial operator.
- What are the hiking trails at Giba Gorge?
- The official Trails page names three: Giba_Track from St Helier Road parking to the N3 underpass (about 3km); Ukhozi Trail, which leaves that track about 800m from parking and rejoins about 1.6km on; and Ndabushe Trail to McIntosh Falls, just under 4km each way.
- Can you take dogs to Giba Gorge?
- Yes, on a lead. The official home page says off-lead dogs have been camera-trapped and that dogs may be banned if that continues. No braais, no loud music, no toilets.
