"Hiking around Pretoria" mostly means one of two things: a big Tshwane-managed reserve with graded trails and resident wildlife, or a smaller municipal green space close to a specific suburb. This guide splits them so you do not drive 40 minutes to a reserve when a suburb walk would do. See also walking trails in Pretoria. Filtered lists: easy hiking trails in Pretoria and free hiking trails in Pretoria. Trails near your current location are on hikes and trails near me, not this Pretoria list.
Hiking spot in Pretoria
A hiking spot in Pretoria on this guide is a Tshwane reserve or a Magaliesberg day hike: Groenkloof, Faerie Glen, Klapperkop, Moreleta Kloof, Rietvlei, Hennops and Shelter Rock. Compare fee and dogs on each listing, or sort the Pretoria hub by nearest.

The big reserves
Rietvlei Nature Reserve (listing) near Irene is about 4,000 hectares. Official hiking is a booked four-hour walk for groups of 10 to 15 — not a walk-up trail network. No pets. Picnic sits at Marais Dam. Confirm the reserve is open after the February 2025 flood closure.
Groenkloof Nature Reserve (listing) is Africa's first proclaimed game sanctuary (1895), about 5km from the city centre. Official day trails: red 3.5km / 1.3km, white 3.7km, yellow 10.5km. Walk-up; book only for a guide or overnight hut. Cash-free. Last entry an hour before 18:00.
Klapperkop Nature Reserve (listing) is the next Johann Rissik Drive gate: official 285 ha, free entrance, 06:00–18:00. Self-guided hikes permitted. The City does not publish named trail distances. Not Groenkloof’s R58 cash-free sanctuary.
Closer to town
Faerie Glen Nature Reserve (listing) on January Masilela Drive is Tshwane's Bronberg reserve: official Hadeda 2.9km, Acacia 2.5km and Kiepersol 4.1km. Cashless adults R23 on the 2026/27 table. Informal picnic, no braai. Dogs need a permit. Same gate as the picnic listing.
Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve, not far from Faerie Glen, is free on the official Tshwane page: Rademeyer 1.5km, Duiker 2.8km, Suikerbos 3.32km. No dogs, no bikes, no picnics or braais. Further north, Wonderboom Nature Reserve centres on a centuries-old wild fig tree and a restored Anglo-Boer War fort, with trails climbing to hilltop views over the city, and Voortrekker Monument Nature Reserve circles the monument itself with free-roaming game including zebra, blesbok and springbok.
Out toward the Magaliesberg
For a longer hike than a park walk, two privately run operators sit roughly 60-90 minutes from central Pretoria. Hennops Hiking Trail (listing) near Hartbeespoort runs three official day trails — Dassie 2km, Zebra 5km and Krokodilberg 10km — crossed by suspension bridges and a cable car. No booking for day visitors; R100 adults on the operator page. The same farm has a river picnic (see picnic spots in Pretoria). Shelter Rock near Skeerpoort is tougher again: an 8km circuit climbing about 400m past Iron Age ruins and South African War forts, but it only opens weekends and public holidays. Both charge R100 entry and don't allow dogs.
Picking between them
If you want wildlife and a full-day option, start with Rietvlei or Groenkloof. If you want something free and close to a specific suburb for an hour or two, Moreleta Kloof. Faerie Glen is a short paid Tshwane walk, not a free park. If you want elevation and do not mind paying, Hennops or Shelter Rock.
Before you go
Pretoria's summer thunderstorms tend to build in the afternoon, so an early start matters more here than the listed grade. Rietvlei is a vehicle-based game reserve with a booked hike; Groenkloof is the walk-up sanctuary. Gate times are enforced. Distance, fees and dog rules come from the trail listing linked in; see our listing disclaimer for seasonal changes.
