Joburg doesn't have a single mountain range to hike. The city's own municipal nature reserves, mostly free to enter, do most of the work. This guide groups them by size and location. Hiking trails in JHB
Hiking trails in JHB on this guide are the same Johannesburg listings: municipal ridges plus the paid days at Cradle Moon and Bothongo. Most municipal reserves are free.
The biggest reserve
Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve (listing), 11km south of the CBD in Kibler Park, is Johannesburg's largest municipal reserve at 680 hectares. JCPZ publishes several nature trails from short walks to nine kilometres — not a named colour-coded table. Entry is free. Dogs are not permitted. Maps sit at the Peggy Vera entrance.
Heritage trails inside the city
Melville Koppies Nature Reserve (listing) is a 150-hectare JCPZ ridge in three sections. Central is Sunday-only (Friends: R100 adult, no dogs, a 5km self-paced map). East is the daily free walk, about 1km, dogs welcome. Kloofendal Nature Reserve (listing) in Roodepoort sits on some of the earliest gold-mining ground on the Reef, free to enter 06:00–18:00 with self-guided walks from 30 minutes to 3 hours and a stone amphitheatre.
Botanical gardens and green spaces
Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, also in Roodepoort, centres on the 70-metre Witpoortjie Falls and a moderate 3.9km Geological Trail, with nesting Verreaux's eagles overhead. The Walter Sisulu Botanical Garden guide covers the trail, the no-dogs rule and why we do not invent SANBI ticket prices. Delta Park (listing) in Victory Park is free, flat, dog-friendly and connects directly into the wider Braamfontein Spruit Trail system if you want to keep going past its own roughly 104 hectares. Modderfontein Reserve (listing) on Norfolk Lane is a private 265-hectare park: official hiking R50 adults, picnic at Dam 3, no pets. The official site does not publish named kilometre loops. Golden Harvest Park (listing) near Northgate is a fenced 55-hectare JCPZ walk with a gate fee — the park page does not publish the amount. The Wilds (listing) is a 16-hectare Houghton koppie: 30 minutes to an hour, walk in groups. Rietfontein Nature Reserve (listing) in Paulshof is a 25-hectare JCPZ walking-trail reserve at 138 Holkam Street — not Pretoria’s Rietvlei. The official page does not publish a fee or a kilometre figure.
Further out
Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve near Heidelberg is a Gauteng provincial reserve on the R550, not a Joburg municipal park. We have not found a current official GDARD trail table or tariff we can publish — call 011 439 6300 before you go. Cradle Moon (listing) near Muldersdrift sits inside a 1,600-hectare conservancy. Official hiking is R100 including the R50 day-visitor entry; the guided 20km summit hike is R200 plus conservation, for four or more advanced hikers. No picnic and no pets. Rhino and Lion Nature Reserve (Bothongo) at Kromdraai is a different private ticket: official self-drive adults R360 with picnic included, and a booked Savannah Trails walk at R500 adults, 2 hours, minimum four people. Closed Mondays. No pets.
Picking between them
For more kilometres, Klipriviersberg or Suikerbosrand. For heritage alongside the walk, Melville Koppies or Kloofendal. For a free, flat, dog-friendly loop in the northern suburbs, Delta Park. Most of these reserves don't take bookings for standard day visits — check the listing for gate hours and any entry fee before you go.
Before you go
Johannesburg's reserves are mostly unfenced or lightly staffed compared to a national park. The standing advice across several of them — Klipriviersberg included — is to hike in pairs and tell someone your return time. Distance, fees and hours come from the trail listing linked in, sourced from the reserve or operator; see our listing disclaimer for seasonal changes.
