“Near me” is a location. Open picnic spots near me and share a location, or pick a city below. Mixing a free municipal lawn with a booked wine-estate basket is the usual reason people arrive with a cooler box and find a reservation system.

Cape Town
For a genuine bring-your-own spot, Company's Garden and De Waal Park in the City Bowl are both free, dog-friendly and flat. Green Point Park near the stadium is the same deal on a larger, 13.5-hectare scale, with a dedicated off-leash dog area. In the southern suburbs, Kirstenbosch's picnic lawns are shaded and walk-in, but don't allow open fires, braais or your own chairs and tables — blankets only. Further out, Silvermine's reservoir-side site and Newlands Forest's picnic and braai area and Tokai Forest's picnic and braai area are SANParks TMNP pay points — confirm the current conservation fee on the official rates page. City reserves with official picnic sites (not SANParks): Helderberg (cashless adults R30, no braai), Tygerberg (cashless adults R40), and Blaauwberg (cashless adults R20, official Eerste Steen picnic and braai), and Rondevlei (official picnic areas; fee on the City tariff download). The full split (free parks vs pay points vs booked estates) is on picnic spots in Cape Town. Dogs are prohibited in TMNP picnic braai areas. For something more formal, Groot Constantia and Vergelegen both supply pre-booked baskets on their estate lawns rather than bring-your-own.
The Winelands
Picnic spots Stellenbosch searches are covered in full on the Stellenbosch picnic guide. Short version: Boschendal and Spier both require booking at least 24 hours ahead and do not allow your own food. Assegaaibosch Nature Reserve outside Stellenbosch is the bring-your-own exception — permanent benches under century-old oaks, first-come first-served and capped at 60 visitors a day. Limietberg’s Tweede Tol is a booked CapeNature picnic on Bainskloof Pass — not a Stellenbosch lawn, and not a walk-up hike.
Pretoria
Full write-up: picnic spots in Pretoria. Short version: Faerie Glen Nature Reserve's picnic site is an informal Tshwane picnic — no braai — behind the same cashless R23 adult gate as the walks. Hennops Picnic Spot toward Hartbeespoort is R100 adults, with two pools and braais on the same farm as the hiking trails. Moreleta Kloof is a free hike that officially bans picnics and braais. Rietvlei’s Marais Dam picnic has braais inside the game reserve; no pets, card only, and confirm the reserve is open.
Johannesburg
Picnic spots Johannesburg searches are covered on the Johannesburg picnic guide. Short version: three official JCPZ picnic parks — Delta Park, Zoo Lake and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens at Emmarentia Dam — all free. Emmarentia bans braais and alcohol. Modderfontein Reserve is a paid Dam 3 picnic, not a City Parks lawn. Hiking reserves stay on the walking pages.
Park picnic near me
A park picnic near me on this list is a municipal lawn you walk onto with your own food: Company’s Garden, De Waal Park, Green Point Park, Delta Park, Zoo Lake and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens. Filter Find to picnic spots and tap Use my location.
Picnic in the park near me
Picnic in the park near me is the same bring-your-own park picnic — blanket, own food, no reservation. Booked estate baskets are a different product. Sort the listed lawns by nearest on Find.
Picnic parks near me, and picnic places that are not parks
A picnic park on this page is a municipal lawn — Company’s Garden, De Waal Park, Green Point Park, Delta Park, Zoo Lake, Johannesburg Botanical Gardens — where you bring your own food. Picnic places also include reserve braai sites with a gate fee and wine-estate baskets you book ahead. The Kind column in the table is the split; “near me” is your location on Find, not a national best-of.
Free vs. booked: check before you pack a basket
If you're bringing your own food, stick to the municipal parks and nature reserves listed above — every wine-estate "picnic" on this site requires advance booking and a fee, and most explicitly ask you not to bring your own spread. Check the specific listing's entry fee and booking requirement before you commit an afternoon to it.
How we picked these
Every spot above is drawn from an individual listing on this site, sourced from the reserve, park or estate's own information rather than written from a generic template — that's also why the free-vs-booked distinction is so consistent across regions: it's a real operational difference between a municipal park and a private estate, not editorial framing. See our listing disclaimer for how we source and correct listing details.
