Zoo Lake

Official JCPZ picnic park next to Johannesburg Zoo — not the zoo ticket, and not Emmarentia Dam.

Zoo Lake is a Johannesburg City Parks picnic park in Parkview / Saxonwold, next to Johannesburg Zoo. Listing: Zoo Lake picnic. It is not Emmarentia Dam and not the zoo itself.

Official facts

JCPZ: the land was donated in 1904 with a split between a public park and a zoological garden. The park opened to the public in 1908. Official facilities: picnic area, dog friendly, boat rides, canoeing, children’s play area, ablutions, a restaurant, the Zoo Lake Sports Club and the Coronation Fountain. The page also names Jazz on the Lake, Carols by Candlelight and Artists under the Sun as events held here. We do not invent a kilometre loop around the water.

Address on the official page: corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Westwold Street, Parkview / Saxonwold. Phone 011 483 1017. Entry is not listed as a charge.

Picnic, dogs, fires

This is one of the three free JCPZ picnic parks on picnic spots in Johannesburg, with Delta Park and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens at Emmarentia Dam. Treat dogs as welcome. Do not copy the botanical-garden braai and alcohol ban onto Zoo Lake unless JCPZ publishes it on this park’s page.

Johannesburg Zoo is next door and charges its own ticket. A Zoo Lake picnic does not include zoo entry.

Is Zoo Lake free?
Yes. Johannesburg City Parks does not publish an entry charge on the official Zoo Lake page. Treat it as a free municipal park. Event bookings and restaurant meals are separate.
Are dogs allowed at Zoo Lake?
Yes. JCPZ lists Zoo Lake as dog friendly. Follow the general parks rule: dogs on a leash in designated areas. This is not Johannesburg Zoo, which is next door and has its own ticket.
Can you braai at Zoo Lake?
The official Zoo Lake page names a picnic area. It does not publish a braai rule. JCPZ’s “no open fires or braais” line on the botanical-garden plan-your-visit page is attached to Johannesburg Botanical Gardens at Emmarentia Dam. We do not copy that garden rule onto Zoo Lake.
