Picnic spots in Cape Town

Free city parks, SANParks braai pay points, and booked wine-estate lawns — not one kind of day.

Picnic spots Cape Town searches mix three different days: a free municipal lawn, a SANParks conservation-fee braai site, and a wine-estate basket you book a day ahead. Mixing those up is how people arrive with a cooler at Groot Constantia, or a dog at Newlands’ picnic fence. Every listing below is on the Cape Town picnic hub.

Free picnic spots in Cape Town

Company’s Garden is the oldest public garden in the city, free, dog-friendly, and a CBD lawn rather than a mountain picnic. De Waal Park in Oranjezicht is fully enclosed and popular for dogs. Green Point Park is 13.5 hectares next to the stadium — dogs on a leash except the north-corner off-leash area, and not inside the biodiversity garden. Rhodes Memorial is the free Devil’s Peak lawn with a café on site. None of these four charge a listed entry fee.

Kirstenbosch lawns

Kirstenbosch picnic lawns sit at the garden entrance under the mountain’s back table. SANBI does not allow open fires, braais, chairs, tables, umbrellas or tents — blankets only, and no dogs. Official visitor page: garden 08:00–19:00 September–March and 08:00–18:00 April–August; South African and SADC adults R110 with ID on the 2026–27 table; cash is not accepted; free parking at Gates 1, 2 and 3. Confirm the live tariff on Kirstenbosch visitor information (SANBI). Skeleton Gorge and Nursery Ravine start from inside the same garden; they are hikes, not the picnic.

SANParks picnic and braai pay points

Table Mountain National Park’s official picnic-sites page names Newlands, Tokai, Silvermine and Oudekraal among the park’s picnic and braai areas. Alcohol, dogs and music are prohibited in those picnic braai areas. Braaing is often banned in high wind. Confirm the current conservation fee on the TMNP rates page — we do not copy a rand figure. A Wild Card or TMNP My Green Card covers Tokai and Newlands braai and picnic pay points (and other named TMNP gates). Neither card replaces a My Activity permit if you walk a dog on allowed trails outside the picnic fence.

Silvermine is the exception on dogs: the reservoir picnic listing allows dogs with a My Activity permit on the far side of the dam, not on the picnic lawns themselves. See the Silvermine Nature Reserve guide for Gate 1 versus Gate 2. Newlands, Tokai and Oudekraal picnic sites do not allow dogs. Oudekraal is the Atlantic-seaboard pay point — see the Oudekraal picnic guide. Forest walks from Union Avenue or Tokai Road are a different visit — see Newlands Forest and Tokai Forest.

Helderberg Nature Reserve

The City lists picnic sites at Helderberg Nature Reserve above Somerset West — cashless adults R30 on the 2026/27 table. Friends page: bring a basket, no braai or gas burners. No dogs except certified service dogs.

Rondevlei Nature Reserve

The City lists picnic areas at Rondevlei Nature Reserve in Grassy Park — 290 hectares, daily 07:30–17:00, closed Christmas Day. Confirm the Nature Conservation tariff on the official False Bay page.

Blaauwberg Nature Reserve

The City lists picnic areas and an Eerste Steen braai at Blaauwberg Nature Reserve north of Bloubergstrand — cashless adults R20 on the 2026/27 table. Coastal section sunrise to sunset. Picnic hours: November–April 08:00–19:00, May–October 08:00–17:00.

Tygerberg Nature Reserve

The City lists picnic areas at Tygerberg Nature Reserve in Welgemoed — cashless adults R40 on the 2026/27 table, not a SANParks pay point. Confirm live hours and the tariff on the City page.

Groot Constantia picnic and Vergelegen picnic

Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine farm: Jonkershuis and Simon’s supply picnic baskets on the lawns. Book Jonkershuis at least 24 hours ahead at reservations@jhuis.co.za — not as a bring-your-own park. Dogs on lead on designated estate paths. Vergelegen in Somerset West is a pre-booked basket under the camphor trees. No pets, no private picnics, book at least 24 hours ahead. The estate’s picnic season closes 1 May 2026 and reopens 1 November 2026. Confirm the current basket price with the estate.
