Picnic spots in Pretoria

Three verified picnic listings — including Rietvlei’s Marais Dam braais.

Picnic spots Pretoria searches usually want a blanket and a braai, not a Big Five reserve. On Hikeza the listings tagged as picnic spots are Faerie Glen, Hennops Picnic Spot and Rietvlei Picnic Area (Marais Dam). Moreleta Kloof is a free hike that officially bans picnics. Hiking-only reserves stay on hiking trails in Pretoria.

Faerie Glen picnic site

Official Tshwane: an informal picnic inside Faerie Glen Nature Reserve. Picnics only — no braais, no alcohol, no gazebos. Same January Masilela gate, hours and cashless R23 adult tariff (1 July 2026–30 June 2027) as the walks. Dogs on a leash with a permit from the cashier. Last entry 17:00.

Hennops Picnic Spot

About 30km from Pretoria and Fourways on the R511 — the same farm as Hennops Hiking Trail. Two swimming pools, braai stands, ablutions and the 1932 suspension bridge. Gate 09:00–17:00. R100 adults, R50 schoolchildren, paid at the day-hikers reception; that fee includes hiking and mountain biking. No shop, no pets, no music. Bring your own chairs and tables. The low-water bridge can close the site after floods. Book-with-the-operator contacts are on the listing: 082 825 9205 and info@hennops.co.za.

Moreleta Kloof is not a picnic

Official Tshwane and Friends pages ban picnics and braais inside Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve. It is a free 06:00–18:00 hike (Rademeyer 1.5km, Duiker 2.8km, Suikerbos 3.32km). No dogs. The restaurant listed on the City page is a separate venue.

Rietvlei picnic at Marais Dam

Rietvlei Picnic Area is inside the game reserve: braai stands, no alcohol, no pets. Closing 18:00 in summer (1 Oct–31 Mar) and 17:00 in winter (1 Apr–30 Sep) on the City page. Hiking is a separate booked walk — see the Rietvlei guide. Confirm the reserve is open.

What this page does not list as a picnic

Groenkloof is a walk-up hiking reserve, not a picnic listing — the City page does not publish a picnic rule we can cite. Johannesburg's verified picnic is Johannesburg picnic spots (Delta Park, Zoo Lake, Emmarentia).

Verified picnic listings on Hikeza are Faerie Glen Nature Reserve (informal picnic, no braai, same cashless R23 adult gate as the walks, dogs on a leash with a permit), Hennops Picnic Spot toward Hartbeespoort (R100 adults, two pools and braais, no pets) and Rietvlei’s Marais Dam picnic (braais, no pets, card only — confirm the reserve is open).
