Picnic spots in Johannesburg: Delta Park, Zoo Lake and Emmarentia

Three official City Parks picnic sites — not every green space in Joburg.

Picnic spots Johannesburg searches usually want a blanket and a cooler, not a game reserve. Hikeza lists three Johannesburg City Parks sites that officially name a picnic area: Delta Park (listing), Zoo Lake (listing) and Johannesburg Botanical Gardens at Emmarentia Dam (listing). Modderfontein Reserve adds a paid private picnic at Dam 3.

Delta Park

Official JCPZ page: 104 hectares, three dams, Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary, picnic area, walking trails and bird hides. A perimeter walk is described as the better part of a morning. The southern border joins the Braamfontein Spruit. Address 77 Craighall Road, Victory Park. Phone 011 888 4831. Free.

Zoo Lake

Official picnic park next to Johannesburg Zoo, corner of Jan Smuts Avenue and Westwold Street (Parkview / Saxonwold). JCPZ lists picnicking, dog walking, boat rides, a children’s play area and the Coronation Fountain. Opened to the public in 1908. Phone 011 483 1017. Free.

Johannesburg Botanical Gardens (Emmarentia Dam)

More than 81 hectares, six kilometres from the city centre, open sunrise to sunset. Main entrance on Olifants Road. Official picnic area and dog-friendly listing. Visitor rules: designated picnic areas, dogs on a leash in designated areas, no open fires, braais or alcohol. Book groups of 15 or more. This is not Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden in Roodepoort.

What this page does not list as a picnic

Walter Sisulu is a SANBI garden trail, not a JCPZ picnic lawn. Klipriviersberg, Melville Koppies and Kloofendal are walking reserves. Modderfontein Reserve is a paid private picnic at Dam 3 (R50 adults, limited capacity, no alcohol) — not a free City Parks lawn. Cradle Moon bans picnics and outside food. Pretoria parks sit on a different guide: picnic spots in Pretoria.
