The Wilds Nature Reserve

Houghton koppie next to the inner city — stone paths and a sundial view, not a picnic lawn and not an invented loop.

The Wilds is a Johannesburg City Parks nature reserve on the edge of Houghton, not a mountain range and not Zoo Lake. Listing: The Wilds Nature Reserve.

Official facts

JCPZ: 16 hectares against koppies, with indigenous gardens, walkways, waterfalls and fountains. Paths ramble across the hillsides with city views. A sundial at the peak marks a skyline viewpoint. Even in winter the page describes the park as evergreen, with red aloes. Events are limited to protect the flora.

The walking-trails page: walks of 30 minutes to 1 hour on old stone paths, views toward Hillbrow Tower and Ponte, and a recommendation to walk in groups because it is close to the city centre. We do not invent a kilometre loop.

Getting there: Joe Slovo Drive from the inner city or Houghton Drive from the north. Parking note on the walking-trails page: off Joe Slovo Drive by the bridge. Phone 011 643 2313.

What this page does not invent

The reserve page does not publish hours, a dog rule, or an entry charge. We do not copy a picnic or braai rule from the botanical-garden plan-your-visit page. Compare a free JCPZ picnic at Zoo Lake or a fenced Northgate walk at Golden Harvest Park.
