Official facts

JCPZ: 680 hectares of open veld and koppies. The name means “stone river mountain.” The page lists 238 bird species, 600 plant species, blesbok, zebra and duiker, the highest concentration of identified Iron Age sites on the Witwatersrand, a BaTswana village replica and the walls of Sarel Marais’s 1850 house. The reserve is fenced. Trails range from short routes to nine kilometres, and Bloubos Spruit runs through most of them. We do not invent a colour-coded trail table on top of that. Maps are at the entrance precinct, according to the association.

The JCPZ walking-trails page describes an easy 30-minute walk beside the spruit, or up to three hours across the koppies, with a guard at the gate.

Phone 011 943 1312 (JCPZ also lists 011 943 2691). Large groups may need JCPZ permission on 011 712 6600 — that is an events line, not the gate.

Two entrances

The association’s preferred entrance is opposite 129 Peggy Vera Road, Kibler Park, with secure free parking. JCPZ’s getting-there copy points to the Silent Pool entrance at the end of Frandaph Drive (off Ormonde Drive / Columbine Avenue). The JCPZ address block is Peggy Vera Road, Kibler Park.

Hours, dogs, picnic

Association FAQ: summer 06:00–18:00, winter 07:00–17:00, every day of the year. Be out by closing. Walking is the only activity inside the reserve: no vehicles, bicycles, pets, camping, alcohol or night walking.

Braais and picnics are not allowed on the trails. The association says there is a braai and picnic area at the entrance precinct — bring your own equipment. That is why this reserve is not one of the three free JCPZ picnic parks on picnic spots in Johannesburg.
