Official facts

JCPZ publishes the reserve as 128 hectares, one of the first nature reserves in Johannesburg, with early gold-mining remains it calls the first gold mine in the city. The mine can be visited by appointment. There is a stone amphitheatre with picnic and ablution facilities, walking trails of various distances, and a dam with a hide. The JCPZ walking-trails page describes those walks as 30 minutes to 3 hours. We do not invent named kilometre loops on top of that. A map is available from the security guard.

Open every day, including public holidays, 06:00–18:00. Fully fenced; a security guard is on duty every day. Phone 011 760 9143.

Access: Christiaan de Wet Road, Wilgerood Road, left onto Topaz Road, right onto Galena Avenue (between Ouklip and Topaz). Official GPS: 26°07′39.09″S, 27°52′50.22″E.

Dogs, picnic, Friends

JCPZ lists a picnic area at the amphitheatre. This is still a nature reserve walk, not one of the three JCPZ picnic parks on picnic spots in Johannesburg (Delta Park, Zoo Lake, Emmarentia).

JCPZ names Friends of Kloofendal as the volunteer group that organises walks and talks. The official page gives Karin Spottiswoode’s numbers for tours and education only — not as a gate phone. Friends publishes a no-dogs, no-alcohol, no-electronic-music rule. We do not copy a Friends email onto the listing.

Questions

Do you pay to enter Kloofendal Nature Reserve?
Johannesburg City Parks does not publish an entry charge on the official Kloofendal page. The listing here is free. Friends of Kloofendal, named on that page, says groups larger than 20 need a booking — confirm that with JCPZ before you arrive with a large group.
What are the hours at Kloofendal Nature Reserve?
JCPZ: every day of the week, including public holidays, 06:00–18:00. Fully fenced, with a security guard on duty every day. A map is available from the guard.
Are dogs allowed at Kloofendal Nature Reserve?
JCPZ does not list dogs as a facility. Friends of Kloofendal, the volunteer group named on the official page, publishes a no-dogs and no-pets rule. We treat the reserve as no dogs. Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, also in Roodepoort, is a different SANBI garden and also does not allow dogs.
