Melville Koppies Nature Reserve

Three sections, three rule-sets — not a free daily 5km loop and not a picnic lawn.

Melville Koppies is a Johannesburg City Parks ridge reserve above Melville and Emmarentia, not The Wilds and not Kloofendal. Listing: Melville Koppies Nature Reserve.

Official municipal facts

JCPZ: 150 hectares of rocky koppies, indigenous fauna and flora, city views and an ancient Iron Age furnace. Trails run through the area. Getting there: from Beyers Naude Drive (Melville or Northcliff), turn onto Judith Road. Address block: Judith Road, Emmarentia. Phone 011 943 3578 (JCPZ also lists 011 712 6600).

Official facilities: footpath, hiking, indigenous plants, photography, limited small corporate events. The JCPZ page does not publish hours, a rand fee, or a dog rule. Those sit on the Friends of Melville Koppies site.

The three sections (Friends of Melville Koppies)

Central is the locked heritage nature reserve. Open Sundays only, 08:00–11:30, except Christmas and New Year. No dogs. Friends charge R100 per adult and R50 under 18 (under 5 free) for maintenance — cash or card at the Judith Road reception hut. Maps for a 5km self-paced walk and a self-guided heritage trail. Guided tours from 08:00; an 8km group hike on the last Sunday of the month (R100). Park at Marks Park Sports Club and walk across Judith Road. Sunday bookings: 066 571 9539.

East is open daily, dawn to dusk, free, about 1km, socialised dogs welcome, suitable for young children. Park on Kloof Road off 7th Avenue, or opposite the garage on Rustenburg Road. Friends: leave valuables behind — this is public open space.

West is open daily. Friends advise walking on scheduled group walks because of security. Socialised dogs are allowed. A monthly Saturday hike (about 90 minutes, R50 donation) is a Friends product, not a municipal booking we can take.

Friends homepage: no braais, camping, picnicking, radios, mountain bikes or vehicles. This is not one of the three free JCPZ picnic parks on picnic spots in Johannesburg.

What this page does not invent

We do not copy a single 5km figure onto East or West. We do not mark the whole reserve free or dog-friendly. We do not put Friends booking emails on the listing. JCPZ says 150 hectares; Friends split the three sections as 50ha / 100ha / 10ha — we keep the municipal total on the listing.

Other Joburg days: hiking trails in Johannesburg, Kloofendal, Klipriviersberg. Run a Melville walk we should verify? Get listed free, or ask about a featured slot.
