Hiking trails in the Winelands

Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl mountain trails combine vineyard views with proper elevation gain, from gentle contour paths to full peak hikes.

The Winelands' hiking sits inside the reserves and estates that also grow the region's wine, so almost every trail here comes with an entry fee and, in most cases, a booked permit. Stellenbosch's routes run through Jonkershoek Nature Reserve; CapeNature says circular-route parking has been closed since 23 March 2026, so visitors use the outside parking and walk about 5km to the trails. Franschhoek's climbs sit in Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve above the town, where a day hiking permit is required for every listed route.

Paarl is different again: Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve is municipally managed rather than run by CapeNature or SANParks, built around the granite domes of Paarl Rock. Limietberg Nature Reserve is the CapeNature Bainskloof / Du Toitskloof gate — official day-hike permits, trails marked for campers rather than picnickers, and Tweede Tol as a separate booked picnic. Several of the region's best-known 'picnic' listings — at Boschendal and Spier — aren't bring-your-own spots at all, but pre-booked basket experiences on the estate lawns.

15 listings are shown here, graded 2 easy, 2 moderate, 3 hard, with measured distances from 2.7km up to 18km. 1 of 15 is dog-friendly.
