Hiking trails in Paarl

Browse trails in Paarl, Winelands.

Paarl's two listings both sit in Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve, which is unusual in being run by Drakenstein Municipality rather than CapeNature or SANParks. The Klipkers Nature Trail is a circular route laid out by local schools, starting at the Afrikaans Language Monument and passing ancient wild olive trees and granite domes; the Paarl Rock hike via Meulwater climbs to the 543m summit of Paarl Rock itself, one of the largest granite outcrops in South Africa. Baboons are active in the reserve on both routes, and dogs aren't permitted.

Both routes are R36 to enter and share the same reserve management contact — Drakenstein Municipality rather than a national conservation body — which is unusual among the Winelands listings on this site. Klipkers starts at the Afrikaans Language Monument itself, while the Meulwater route to Paarl Rock's summit begins at a separate picnic site off Jan Phillips Mountain Drive, so the two aren't directly linked despite sharing a reserve.
