Shelter Rock is a privately run hiking venue on the southern slopes of the Magaliesberg near Skeerpoort, roughly 60-90 minutes from both Johannesburg and Pretoria. Its 8km circular Mountain Trail climbs about 400m to the summit over natural, rocky and uneven terrain, passing old trees, Iron Age village ruins and forts from the South African War, with klipspringer, dassie and chacma baboons often spotted along the way. The trail is only open on weekends and public holidays, with entry before 11:00 recommended.
