Rietvlei Nature Reserve is a City of Tshwane conservation area of about 4,000 hectares near Irene, created as a water scheme and proclaimed since 1929. Official hiking is a day hike of about four hours for groups of 10 to 15 people; booking in advance is essential. Normal game-viewing day visits do not need a booking, but you may not leave your vehicle except at designated spots (hides, toilets, coffee shop). No pets. No alcohol. Card only. The official tariff table on the Tshwane page is dated 1 July 2022–30 June 2023 — confirm the current fee before you go. The reserve was closed from 19 February 2025 after flooding; confirm it is open.
